Featured Dog Shop: The Olive Crow

I'm happy to start the year with a post featuring a wonderful shop for dog lovers and pet owners called The Olive Crow. Diane Croston, is the owner and she personally designs and creates all the items you see from the shop. She is a big supporter of pet adoption and is a proud owner of two beautiful, adopted dogs.

In this interview, Diane tells us how she started her business, some challenges she encountered and how she successfully got through. She also introduces us to Scout and June, tells the story behind their adoption, and shares some tips for people who are planning to adopt a pet.

1. How old is your shop?
I opened my shop last February but did not start listing anything until the end of March!

2. What’s the inspiration behind your shop name?

I threw around a couple of names until I decided on The Olive Crow. I wanted to use crow in my title because it is a family nickname, but had a hard time with the rest of the name. My sister suggested olive due to my skin tone color and that was it I loved it!

3. What moved you to start you own dog apparel business!

It actually started when I was looking for a bed for my Great Dane-June. Everything I found was either extremely expensive for it was made from cheap ugly fabric that I would not want to have out in my home. I was looking for modern beautiful patterns that I would enjoy sitting in my living room and would go with my décor. So actually it came from necessity.

4. Can you give us a peek on the creative process involved in making clothing and accessories for dogs?
Since I make three sizes of duvets, my creative side comes out of looking for fabric to use. I get several home décor magazines and look for trends and new fabric companies to purchase from. I am also in the process of adding on to the things I sell in the shop.

5. What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love getting feedback from customers. Some send me photos of their pet on the duvet in their home. It’s nice to see the dog enjoying it along with their owner getting pleasure from having a bed that’s nice to look at in their home.

6. Is there anything you dislike about what you do?

There isn’t really much that I don’t like about running my shop. I guess it would be when customers are looking for something specific and I am unable to get them what they are looking for. I have had customers looking for a specific fabric or color and when I look and I am unable to find one that is made in a durable enough fabric. There are so many gorgeous fabrics out there that I wish I could use, but many are not made to handle a dog.

7. What was the toughest challenge you faced so far?

When I first opened I had a decent amount of duvets listed that were not made yet. Then one day I went to make a duvet for an order and my sewing machine broke! I freaked out! I immediately had to put my shop on vacation mode so no more orders came in while I looked for a new sewing machine. I ended up getting a new machine the next day and got the order out in time. I realized that I need to stay on top of my listings and never let my shop get behind.

8. Name you top 3 favorite picks from your shop:

I would have to say my Black/Denton Ikat Duvet Cover. It is the one that I have for my dogs in my house.

Next would be the Orange/Denton Chevron Duvet Cover because I can’t get enough of orange right now! I love the bold chevron print and the fabric is extremely thick and durable.

Last would be the Mingie Floral Duvet Cover. I normally don’t like too many floral prints but this one reminds me something very vintage. I am really into finding vintage clothes and attempting to alter them right now so this one is really sticking on me!

9. Your favorite dog shops:

First one is Courtanai, she makes the most adorable scarves for dogs and not to mention her cute model! I just think that they are the cutest things! I also love the photography from Unwantednycpets, they donate 100% of the proceeds to www.unwantednycpets.org. The photography on this site just touches my heart. My other favorite shop is Symmetricalpottery. It is a husband and wife team that put together beautiful pottery and my favorites are their dog treat jars. They are so beautiful and would look great on my kitchen counter…hope to order one soon!

10. Can you introduce us to the beautiful dogs who model?

Of course! My two beautiful models are actually my dogs. The little lady is Scout, she is a four year old lab/pitt/etc. mix my little melting pot of the dog world. She was born on the front porch of a home in downtown Toledo.

My Husband and I were looking for a puppy at the Dog Warden’s Office, and a man was bringing in two tiny black puppies only about four weeks old and we adopted her on the spot.

Her personality is one that I have never come across before. She loves to play but only when she wants to, she also loves to be petted but, of course, only when she wants you to touch her. She is the feisty one of the two that likes to push the boundaries. She is very similar to her mom! :)

The big beauty in my photos is June. She is a two year old Great Dane. I have always wanted a Great Dane but I didn’t want to purchase one from a breeder.

We looked on Petfinder.com, local shelters, and non-profit organizations for three months and then found June. We adopted her from a fantastic local rescue called Animal House Rescue.

June’s story is that she came from a dreaded puppy mill; she also came with an infection on the back of her thigh the size of a golf ball! But after her surgery (that the rescue paid for) she came home to meet her new sister Scout.

Let me tell you, it was not love at first sight but they have grown to like each other. June is our little (well I guess big) lover, with such a playful and childlike personality.

11. Why should people not be afraid to adopt a dog from a shelter?

A lot of people assume that there is something wrong with all the pets in a rescue or shelter. This is completely false! Many have been given up due to loss of their owner’s job, moving, or the most common one lack of responsible owner. These animals are the same as if you were to go to a breeder and purchase a dog. I know that many people are looking for a puppy of a specific breed and believe me they are out there to be adopted. My situation is a perfect example; I found a pure bred Great Dane at three months old in a rescue. It is possible, so take the time to look and please adopt and save a life!

12. Please tell us how you support animal rescue organizations all over the world?

I am little embarrassed to answer this question because I really don’t feel that I do enough for something that I feel strong about. If you don’t have much time to donate like me there are little things in your everyday life that you can do to make a difference. The first is to try to encourage anyone who is looking to get a pet to adopt! Who knows you may be the influence to change their mind!

I have signed up with a web site called: theanimalrescuesite.com. They email you once a day and you click a button to help feed animals in need. They also have an online shop and every purchase you make helps feed needy animals. This is a fantastic organization and I encourage everyone to sign up.

I also signed up for a Community Reward program through my local grocery store. A percentage of every purchase I make goes to a local shelter of my choice. I ask people to check out their grocery store to see if they have certain programs like this that you are able to sign up for. I also have donated a few duvets this year to rescues for silent auctions, and I hope to do more of that this year.

13. What advice can you give to people who are considering pet adoption?

Be sure that you pick the right pet for your lifestyle. Yes puppies are cute, but not everyone has the time to teach the necessary manners and potty train a puppy. There are fantastic adult dogs out there that already know these qualities that you may be looking for.

For example, if your family is not that active, and you get a Weimariner puppy, you may be in for a lot of trouble. Yes, their silver coat and amber eyes may cave your heart, but this breed was bred for hunting and requires a great amount of exercise and play time. Your lifestyle and this breed’s requirements do not mix and you may end up sending this dog back to a shelter. So I ask to please do your research and don’t just fall for the first set of cute puppy eyes.

14. What tips can you give to other dog owners?

As many other dog owners may say, patience is a must when getting a new dog. Whether getting a puppy or an adult dog every dog will need to get accustomed to its new environment and you. This will take time! When you get upset the dog will sense this and end up getting strung out as well. Find out what motivates your dog this could be treats, toys, or play time. Finding this out will help you in the teaching process with your dog.

15. Businesswise, what tips would you want to share for aspiring home based entrepreneurs like you?
Organization is key to keeping your shop running smoothly. It may take a couple tries to see what works for you and your type of shop but it is a must. Also don’t go into it for the sole purpose of only making money; you need to enjoy what you are doing to make it work.

The Importance of Giving Your Pet a Dog Tag

Every dog owner knows how sad it would be to lose a pet and surely you will do anything to protect your pet from all dangers. The importance of providing your pet with a dog tag may be obvious – it greatly increases the chance of your dog being reunited you in case it gets lost. Of course, pet tags are not just for dogs but for cats too!

A typical dog tag bears the dog’s name, home address, and the owner’s phone or mobile number. These details should be engraved on the tag to make sure that all information will be visible when it is most needed. For this reason, sterling silver and brass dog tags are popular among pet owners.

A pet wearing a tag indicates that it belongs to its owner, and that it has a loving home to return to. Aside from the dog tag, it’s also important to choose a matching collar that will securely stay on your dog until he’s safely home. However, see to it that the collar comfortably fits your dog, not too tight or too lose either.

The aesthetic attributes of a dog tag such as the collar, shape and design should be secondary factors. Always consider your dog’s comfort and safety, before anything else. A most recent innovation for pet lovers is the Virtual Leash, which was introduced in the market in May 2010 by Jack Carrier, owner of a company that offers dog tags for dogs and custom dog tags for dogs.

"Virtual Leash" shows more than just the address and the phone number. It gives your pet its very own website, containing all relevant information you want to provide to ensure that your dog will find its way to your home at the soonest possible time. The website address is included on the tag so the finder can check out the page and be able to see all information you entered about your pet. The finder can send you an instant alert, by clicking the “I found this pet” button and entering the last four digits of the phone number on the tag so you can be immediately notified through text, email, Twitter, Facebook or any method of notification you choose.

The owner’s personal identity is protected because all your contact info stays hidden. It also shows includes a Google Map to show potential finders a safe place for your pet where you or your friends can go to pick up your pet.

Featured Dog Shop: Beantown Handmade

Anne and Michael are the couple behind the shop Bean Town Handmade. I would like to thank Anne for taking the time to do this interview. More than just being shop owners, both of them are animal lovers too and a portion of their proceeds are donated to various animal rescue organizations all over the world. How old is your shop?
I started Beantown Handmade in November of 2008.

What's the inspiration behind your shop name?
Our Boston Terrier Bean was the inspiration for our shop name. Bean is named after Boston, aka Beantown.

What moved you to start your own dog apparel business?
When Bean was a puppy he was always cold and we had a hard time finding clothing that would fit him well and keep him warm in our cold Nebraska winters.

Can you give us a peek on the creative process involved in making clothing and accessories for dogs?
Our dogs Bean and Lily are definitely the inspiration for my creative process. I try to design to meet their needs and often try out new designs on them for several weeks to see if they are comfortable and can move freely.

What was the toughest challenge you faced so far and how did you get over it?
I am only able to crochet so many hours a day without injuring myself, so that can be a bit frustrating at times. I’ve learned how to manage this throughout the time I’ve been in business. I only take as many orders as I can fill. It’s important to make sure I stay healthy and keep enjoying what I do.

Can you introduce us to the beautiful dogs who model your clothes?
Most of our modeling is done by our dog Bean, who is a natural in front of the camera. Our female Boston Terrier Lily doesn’t like to model as much as Bean but she will occasionally oblige us for some treats.

Can you tell us more about your dogs?

We got Bean from a reputable Boston Terrier breeder when he was a puppy. We adopted Lily through Nebraska Boston Terrier Rescue in March of 2010.

Why should people not be afraid to adopt a dog from a shelter?
There are so many dogs in the world in need of a good home, and the vast majority of them are in that situation at no fault of their own. Because Lily was already an adult dog when we brought her into our family, the transition was really seamless. She and Bean are best friends, and our lives are all so much richer because of her.

Please tell us how you support animal rescue organizations all over the world?
We donate products and make monetary donations to a variety of rescue organizations and the WSPA.

What advice can you give to people who are considering pet adoption?
Adopting a pet is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do. Every day you provide love and care for a rescued pet you are giving them a wonderful gift. All animals deserve a second chance at a fulfilling and happy life.

Businesswise, what tips would you want to share for aspiring home based entrepreneurs like you?

I think the most important thing to remember is to scale your business to what is best for you.

I’ve had times when I ran Beantown full time and others where I scaled it back.

The wonderful thing about being your own boss and running a business online is that you can set a pace that’s right for you.

Featured Dog Shop: Charlie ♥ Diesel

It's so nice to meet fellow dog people who have such a big heart for our four-legged friends. Ashleigh is the designer and owner of Charlie ♥ Diesel at Etsy. Ashleigh shares with us how she and her husband started as volunteers for an animal shelter in their city and their desire to help homeless dogs inspired them to start a business. She also talks about the dogs in their lives, her views on pet adoption and the joys and challenges of being a dog lover and a business owner.

How old is your shop?

We actually opened Charlie ♥ Diesel just over a month ago.

What's the inspiration behind your shop name?

It just sort of came to me. I’d been kicking around names for a while and nothing really fit. I wanted it to be really personal, but also really catchy. I was going through our other Etsy shop, Indian Summer, and I noticed the little favorites heart. And it was perfect.

Charlie and Diesel are our two young Pit Bulls. (And yes, most days, they do heart each other.) The name itself is a little awkward at first, I’ll admit, but that little heart in Charlie ♥ Diesel is just too cute to resist.

What moved you to start your own dog apparel business?

Oddly enough, it was philanthropy that made me move in this direction. My husband, Ryan, and I started the process to become volunteers at the Riverside City Animal Shelter, and though they’re in a beautiful new facility thanks to a kind and generous benefactor, they are severely underfunded- so much so, that volunteers do most of the jobs that an employee would normally be paid to do- even assisting in surgeries.

Since we both already work full time, we knew we wouldn’t be able to give as much of our time as we wanted to. But what else could we do? I was goofing around with Charlie one day and put a neck warmer on her that I’d actually intended to give my husband last winter. And it was so stinking cute. And there it was: a happy accident that turned into an Etsy shop for canines, where we donate 20% of the sale price of each item to the Riverside City Animal Shelter.

Can you give us a peek on the creative process involved in making clothing and accessories for dogs?

It’s actually a lot of fun, and sort of really challenging to make items for dogs. They’re all shaped so differently. The creative process generally involves a random statement that begins with “You should make...” or “I’ve got an awesome idea...” and then ends with a freestyle crochet or knitting, or glue gunning attempt to duplicate whatever we’ve seen in our heads. We don’t use any patterns for our items- I just wing it, and keep one of everything on hand to copy.

I’ve recently started making myself write my patterns down, in an effort to save time counting stitches and wondering which size hook or needle I used. The shop has actually been much more successful than I foresaw, which is fantastic and a little overwhelming at the same time.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love the interaction. Dog people are so friendly and energetic! I’ve had a lot of great conversations with some really wonderful people, and I look forward to many more.

Is there anything you dislike about what you do?

I dislike having to go to my day job when all I want to do is create all day. The shop is always on my mind, and it makes it difficult to focus on anything else.

What was the toughest challenge you faced so far?

Actually, it was Saturday morning. I woke up to an email that said I had accidentally switched shipping labels, and that the expedited package intended for a customer in San Francisco had arrived in Indiana, right on schedule. Oops.

How did you get over it?

Well, it was 8:30 in the morning, and my phone beeped next to me on the nightstand. I read the message, and immediately began freaking out. I hate messing up. HATE it. I started running around the house in a tizzy, repeating, “Oh my God, what do I do? What do I do? What do I do?”

Once I calmed down, I contacted both the customers and we worked it all out. They were both very understanding and kind, which was a HUGE relief. For the expedited order, we settled on Overnighting the items in order to get them there in time for Halloween. I checked USPS and the Express Shipping option said it would arrive October 31st. A post office only 20 minutes away had a final pick up at 4:00 PM. Perfect. Plenty of time to get it done and out.

You would not believe all the setbacks I ran into, remaking that order to rush it out for overnight shipping. First, I kept skipping stitches in the hooded cowl I was making, which I never EVER do. It’s a major waste of time when you have to pull out half your stitches and redo them, just because you skipped ONE.

Then I went to create my USPS Express shipping label, and the expected arrival date had changed from October 31st to November 1st. WTH? Are you kidding me? After all that? Seriously? So I checked FedEx. They could ship it and it would arrive before 10:30 AM October 31st. Yayyy!!! Only problem... It was now 2:00 PM and every drop off location had a last pick up at 12:30. Oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no. I kept scrolling through the list, and (thank God) found one that had a final pick up of 3:00 PM, that was only 15 miles from my house. 2:20 PM: I threw everything together, and I sped (quite literally) down the freeway to the FedEx location, and got it in with 15 minutes to spare. FedEx on Winchester in Temecula, you saved my butt.

Well, for sure I love our Hoodwinked Slouchy Hooded Cowl. It’s the cutest thing EVER, and it’s a huge hit.

your favorite dog shops:

Well, the list is kind of long... I love HandmadeMonster on Etsy with their fantastically clever monster making dog hats, as well as BeantownHandmade for their adorable hats and clothing, and it’s not exactly a dog shop, but I LOVE the animals rights jewelry designed by Christy Robinson at crobinsondesign. Susan Sabo’s Shelter Dogs photographs are very moving and beautiful and BullyPaws has some really adorable dog jewelry and keychain designs as well.

Can you introduce us to the beautiful dogs who model your clothes?

Absolutely. Right now, everyone on our site is family owned. Minnie the five month old blue brindle Chihuahua and Bella the 5 year old part-Miniature Poodle belong to my mother-in-law, Karen.

Rowdy, the three year old black tri Toy Australian Shepherd, and Lola, the one year old blue merle Miniature Australian Shepherd both belong to my mother, Marci.

Charlie, the 3 year old golden fawn Pit Bull, and Diesel, the 2 year old black Pit Bull are my very own fur children, and the namesakes of our shop. In the future we’re hoping to work together with our animal shelter and local rescues to have their adoptable dogs model our items, in order to give them a little more publicity.

Can you tell us more about your dogs?Were they adopted?

Well, Charlie and Diesel are my husband’s and my only children. A few months after we were married and moved into our new house, we found Charlie (who, FYI, is a girl dog, despite her decidedly masculine name) on Craigslist as an 8 week old pup someone didn’t have time for.

A year later, we found Diesel at the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Shelter when he was around 6 months old. As I was walking down the aisle at the pound, he put his feet up on the bars of his kennel and cried for me in the saddest voice I had ever heard. The next day we took him home- pointy Pit Bull ears and all.

Why should people not be afraid to adapt a dog from a shelter?

First of all, the dogs listed for adoption at the animal shelters have been personality tested. Any dog found to be aggressive in any way is not considered adoptable. So, even if it’s a Bull Mastiff or a Pit Bull, if it’s on the adoptable side, it’s not a dog that the expert shelter staff deem dangerous or harmful.

These days, a lot of dogs end up in the shelter because their owner lost their home and had to move into an apartment, or somewhere they weren’t allowed to keep them. Many of them are strays. It’s a sad fact, but a lot of people are just releasing their pets onto the streets to fend for themselves. Then they get picked up and taken to the shelter. Most of the time, dogs don’t end up in the shelter because anything or something was wrong.

Can you please tell us more about the Riverside City Animal Shelter?

The Riverside County Animal Services team envisions an educated and responsible county, where euthanasia is no longer a necessary evil. They provide the best care for the animals that they are able to, and seek lifetime homes for the pets they place. The shelter is desperately in need of volunteers. What advice can you give to people who are considering pet adoption? What tips can you give to other dog owners?

Know your breed. Different breeds bring different challenges. Think before you adopt... Don’t get it just because it’s cute. If you send a dog back to the shelter, it is far less likely to get adopted another time around. We love our Pitties. Having no human children, these guys are our world. When we lost our home last year, we moved in with our parents in order to keep them.

My husband went up to work in North Dakota, and we planned to move up there- even sent all our things (and it’s VERY expensive to move cross country). Then we found out that, not unlike in Canada, Pit Bulls are banned in the majority of their cities. A Pit Bull can be impounded and euthanized just for being walked down the street in Minot, North Dakota. So we stayed in California and made it work.

We love our animals. That being said- a Pit Bull is a great responsibility. They are wonderful, loyal animals, but no thanks to the media, people are hateful and afraid of them. You can’t rent an apartment if you own a Pit- you can’t rent through a property management company either. If your living situation is unstable, don’t take home an “aggressive type” breed- no matter how wonderful.

There are dogs in all shapes and sizes and energy levels that are desperately in need of homes. Find the right one for you and your family.Also, make sure you have the time and energy to devote to a four legged friend. They’re pack animals. They need companionship- not just to be shoved out in the backyard by themselves to wait hopefully, day in and day out for your attention. Housebreaking is actually really simple, and it’s very rewarding for your pet to actually be a trusted member of your family.

SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS! It may not be hard to find home for your adorable Golden Retriever/Sneaky Neighbor Dog mixed breed puppies, but over population is what is killing hundreds of dogs in shelters across the U.S. every day.

Businesswise, what tips would you want to share for aspiring home based entrepreneurs like you?

Be ready. Even if you think there may not be a market for what you’re selling, there most likely is. And these people are watching and waiting for you. Etsy is a fantastic resource for sellers of handmade and vintage items. It’s inexpensive and very useful.

Would you like to adopt a pet from a shelter? Considering adoption as your first is gracious and kind. Here are some tips to make your adoption experience a happy and a rewarding one:

Are you ready to own a pet? Having a pet is a life-time commitment. Too many cats and dogs have ended up in rescue homes because their owners were not committed to their responsibilities. Many animals in the shelter have been neglected or abandoned. They are in need of a loving, forever home so it’s important to make sure that you are committed to the responsibilities of being a pet owner.

However, you should not let the challenges of caring for a pet stop you from doing what your heart tells you to do. If you sincerely want to adopt, you can overcome the obstacles by choosing the right pet, and doing the necessary preparations.

Choose a pet that matches your lifestyle. Do you spend more than eight hours of most days away from home? If you have a very hectic schedule and don’t have a lot of time to attend to a pet, a cat is a much better choice for a pet because they can withstand long hours of isolation better than dogs do.

Do you live in a house with a spacious lawn or in an apartment? Obviously, you should only consider small dog breeds if you are renting a small unit. It’s also worth considering that larger dog breeds are more active than smaller breeds. If you don’t have time to take your dog on walks every day, a smaller breed is a better choice.

Make sure that every member of the family is ready. Is there anyone in your family is not fond of animals? If you have children, you should explain to them the things they should expect when your adopted pet comes home. Children should understand that animals should be respected and treated with love.

Parents should also draw out what their children feels about the matter. Do they have apprehensions? Are they scared? Are the excited? Children should be taught how to act around the animal and should never be left alone with a pet without adult supervision. What kind of pet would they like? What dog breed or cat breed do they want?

Is everyone ready to take on the tasks involved in pet care? Who will be responsible for feeding, bathing, and cleaning-up? If members of the family are willing to take shifts, a written schedule should be made to make it easy for everyone.

If you have other dogs in the home, you should also consider how they will get along when their new brother or sister comes home. Some breeds get along well with other dogs better. Your matchmaker from the shelter home should help you find a suitable companion for your dogs.

Consider your finances. Taking care of a pet is not costless and pet owners should be realistic about this aspect. Animal care involves expenses (food, vaccinations, supplies, grooming, vet check-ups, etc). Of course, a larger breed would also require a bigger budget on food.

It’s a good idea to set aside a specific portion of your income each month for pet care, especially if own more than one dog or cat.

Prepare your home. Before bring your adopted pet home, make sure that there are no hazards which can result to accidents. Prepare a space for your dog or cat. Dogs love to investigate and small objects on the floor can be choking hazards. Make sure that the only things within the dog’s reach are his toys.

Get to know the pet you are considering to adopt. Volunteers from shelters evaluate each animal’s temperament to help find a good match of adopted humans. The natural temperament of a dog or cat may also vary depending on its breed. If you have kids in the home, you should look for breeds that are more tolerable with children. For example, Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are known to be naturally friendly even to strangers.

Learning about the dog’s story before it was rescued is also important. This information should be provided by the shelter. Rescue homes do prepare these animals by putting them in a foster home and giving them basic training before they are put out for adoption. Some dogs or cats may need extra care because of a disability or because of what they’ve been through. Some may need a special diet because of their health condition.

Choose a rescue home wisely. An animal rescue home should protect the rights and should promote the humane treatment of all animals. It should not practice inhumane method of Euthanasia of Animals. A respectable shelter should have a No Kill policy unless there is a justifiable reason to euthanize such as if the animal is extremely suffering from an untreatable disease or physical distress.

Understand the adoption process. Does the organization conduct a background check to ensure that you are ready to take care of the animal? It’s good to adopt from a shelter that goes out its way to make sure that the animal finds a loving home for good before allowing it to leave. Do not support organizations that are not sincerely helping animals but are only using this advocacy to make money.

Would you like to get a pet? If yes, then you should seriously consider adopting one from an animal rescue center.Some people are afraid to adopt pets from shelters because they think all animals here were given up by their owners because of bad behavior. While this might be true for some, many dogs end up in shelters to no fault of their own.

Here are common reasons why dogs are abandoned:

The owner cannot take care of the dog anymore due to time and financial issues.

The original owner has fallen ill, has been taken into a nursing home or has been dead.

A couple gets divorce and no one wants to keep the dog.

A couple has a child and the dog is no longer wanted.

The owner leaves for another country or moves to a new apartment that does not allow pets.

Some dogs ended up in shelters because they were lose.

Many dogs who have been victims of puppy mills end up in shelters because they cannot be sold.

It’s important to understand that animal rescue organizations have special programs that provide training (socialization, housebreaking, etc) to make sure that the dog you choose is fit for adoption. Dogs who have been abandoned and neglected just needs some time and loving discipline to recover.

Indeed, rescued dogs turn out to be the most loving, loyal pets to their owners. And if this is not enough, here are more reasons why you should consider pet adoption:

Less training is needed. Buying a puppy actually involves a lot more training than adopting a pet from a rescue home. As mentioned, animal shelter organizations evaluate these animals and give them the training they need to prepare them for their new home. Of course, this doesn’t mean they will not need additional training when they come home to you, but it would easier than starting from scratch.

Build a stronger bond. Rescued dogs turn out to be the most affectionate, loyal dogs a person can ever have. A dog is a social animal, he is a pack animal who wants to belong and if he finds that sense of belonging in your home, you can be sure that the dog will remain loyal to you until the end.

Adopting is cheaper. Rescued dogs have been spayed or neutered, they have been given shots, they have been physically checked for health problems by vets from the shelter. You may need to give a s mall amount of donation or a fee when you adopt but this is far cheaper than buying a puppy from a pet store. The small fee is needed so that animal rescue organizations can continue with their mission, rescuing dogs who need help.

You know the dog’s personality. Dogs at shelters have stayed at foster homes or have been evaluated so you can learn about the dog’s background and personality before you adopt to make sure that he will fit with your lifestyle.

You save a dog’s life. Of course, when you adopt a dog from a shelter, you will be saving this dog’s life and you will be giving him the loving home he deserves.

I am starting a new segment on this blog called, Featured Dog Shop for business owners who are dog lovers too. And I'm very happy to introduce you to Ginny, shop owner of Lifesruff at Etsy.

Ginny has been an entrepreneur for 25 years but only started selling clothes and accesories for dogs recently. In this interview, Ginny talks about her experiences, challenges and joys in managing an online business as well as in taking care of her two adorable dogs, Madeline and Jack. She also speaks about pet adoption and gives some tips for those who are considering to adopt and for dog owners alike.

How old is shop?

I just opened my etsy shop Lifesruff on September 7 2011.

What's the inspiration behind your shop name?

My 2 dogs lead such a comfortable,content life ...oblivious to any negativity. Their day consist of play,nap,snuggle with my husband or I ,fetch toys, nap some more. I sometimes say to them “ you guys have such a rough life. ” So , the name “Lifesruff” seemed fitting for a shop devoted to dog apparel.

What moved you to start your own dog apparel business?

I had been creating and selling all kinds of items from jewelry to handbags to aprons for 5 years and selling them at crafts shows as well as at the salon I has owned for 25 years. I had been wanting to try selling in an online venue for a couple of years,but knew that I would not have the time while still running my salon business.

Then this past June, life threw me a curve ball when the building I was renting was sold and I only had 2 weeks to move. I decided to catch the ball and run in a different direction with it. I retired from my salon and decided to open the Etsy store and devote my full attention to selling online.

Focusing on the dog apparel for the store was born out of necessity. The first pup we adopted was born with only 3 legs so a lot of commercially available sweaters and coats did not work for her. I began making coats for her that would work with her disability, so making dog apparel as a creative outlet was a natural progression for me.

Can you give us a peek on the creative process involved in making clothing and accessories for dogs?

When I am creating a new item for a dog, I look at the project the same way I do when I create things for people. What colors and fabrics would make eye catching combinations? What little details can I add: hand knit collars, vintage buttons,pockets , trims etc., that will really make that item stand out. I will often spend nearly as much time with this planning part of the process as I do making the item.

Another important part of the creative process for me is considering the pet's comfort. Will the item go on and off the dog easily? Will it be comfortable on your pup ? And will it stay on without a struggle? If the item doesn't meet these requirements, I go back to the drawing board.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Of course it is creating the apparel then having a chance to work with my dogs on modeling the items. Taking the photos is a real challenge and takes a lot of patience, on both my part and my dogs part ! We are all getting better at it. I am finding I am really enjoying this part of the process.

Is there anything you dislike about what you do?

I do not enjoy the “business” end :accounting, book keeping paper work. I certainly know from my 25 years running my salon that this aspect of any type of business can't be ignored. You either hire some one to do it for you or learn to do it your self.

What was the toughest challenge you faced so far?

That's easy. It has definitely been trying to learn the ins and outs of online marketing, SEO and using social networking. This has been very difficult for me, especially since I ran a successful B&M business for 25 years with out using any of these tools.

How did you get over it?

At first, I was resistant to learning all that stuff, particularly the social networking.I realized very quickly that I can have the most gorgeous handmade dog coats,but if people can't find them online then they are not going to sell. I dove in and began reading everything I could find online, in Etsy Forums and blogs. At first it was like a foreign language. I am learning but still have a long way to go . I have ventured into Facebook and am actually finding that more fun than I thought it would be.

Name your top 3 favorite picks from your shop:

My dog cape/bandanas- these are really fun alternatives to the traditional bandanas done in great fabrics like felted wool and silk.

My fleece lined dog coats with hand knit collars. This was the first item I made for our pup with only 3 legs so I guess I'm partial to those.

My fleece lined waterproof dog jackets done in tear resistant Gortex. These come in really handy not just for rainy days. In the late spring here in Upstate New York where we have been known to have wet snow through the end of April!

Can you introduce us to the beautiful dogs who model your clothes?

My 2 models are Jack, a 3 year old Shih Tzu and Madeline a 4 ½ year old Shih Tzu mix. Maddy doesn't love modeling as much as Jack does. If I give Jack a small treat after each outfit change, he will model all day long. Maddy is not quite so patient.

Were they adopted?

Yes, both were adopted from situations where they were not wanted because of being born with a disability.

Can you tell us more about about them?

Madeline was our first adoption. At 7 weeks , she was about to go to the local pound because she had been born with only 3 legs and no one would take her. I went to just take a look at her, she came hopping over to me on those 3 legs and hopped right in my lap as I sat on the floor.

Of course, I fell in love with her! I was a little concerned about her getting around but she has adapted and can keep up with other dogs just fine. She was such a joy that about a year later, we decided to look for another pup with a disability.

We found Jack who was born with only 1 eye. Jack is a bit timid and is afraid of almost any loud noise ( perhaps that is because of his limited vision) but they are both very smart, loving dogs.

Why did you choose to adopt?

The first adoption was a total fluke. We were not looking for a pup,but when I heard about Maddy, I just had to go see her. We really wanted to give a dog that had been rejected by someone else , a secure loving home.

Why should people not be afraid to adopt?

I wish more people would adopt from a shelter or an individual who no longer wants the pet, or a rescue group. I don’t think that people should be afraid of doing this or adopting a pet with a disability because, I truly believe that these pets somehow know that they have been given a second chance. I think there is a special bond created with these special pets and they will love you unconditionally forever.

What advice can you give to people who are considering pet adoption?

First and foremost is to consider the dog's needs first. How much time do you have to devote to training the dog? Is it a breed that needs a lot of exercise? Make sure those types if things mesh with you and your family's life style.

What tips can you give to other dog owners?

Patience, patience and more patience! Consistent enforcement of training and behavior rules by every member of the household. If you have more than 1 dog, treat them as individuals in the training process.

I leaned this the hard way when training Jack. I tried to use the exact same techniques on him that were so successful with Maddy. This didn't work at all. I had to let go of my frustration and use totally different methods with Jack. They are really no different than people with each having their own personalities.

Businesswise, what tips would you want to share for aspiring home based entrepreneurs like you?

You have to learn to balance your time in a home based business. I am still learning how to do this myself. Some days I literally start at 8am and am still on the computer at 8pm....7 days a week. I have been trying to schedule blocks of time through out the day for myself, my husband, my pets and sometimes even housekeeping!

By the same token,having your business in your home provides a lot more distractions to the operation of your business. If you have orders to fill and laundry piling up you may have to just let the laundry go another day or two.

Getting to Know the Miniature Pinscher

The Miniature Pinscher is a small but brave breed of dog. It sees itself as a big dog rather than a miniature one. A min pin is instinctively protective of his human and is not afraid to be aggressive. This is obvious with his loud, piercing bark.

A min pin may resemble a Doberman Pinscher (particularly black with rust min pins) but this breed is not a miniature version of a Doberman. Coat colors vary from black with rust, chocolate, to red or stag red. Miniature pinschers can grow from 10 inches to 12 inches in height and length. They have short, smooth coat so grooming is not a problem. Bathing can be done at least once a week or you can simply use a damp wash cloth for cleaning. Min pins do shed so gentle combing should be done regularly. They can get cold easily so it’s important to use lukewarm water and to wipe the coat with a dry towel right away. Make sure that his bedding is soft and warm enough, especially during cold seasons. It helps to clothe them with warm sweater as well.

Min pins are very inquisitive and alert which is why they are known as “escape artists”. And because they are small, they can easily fit into any opening they can find and get lost. Never forget to watch your min pin and check the door whenever someone leaves the house or comes in. Min Pins move quickly, with a galloping gait. A min pin can easily slip out without your notice. See to it that there are no small objects on the floor, the sofa or places that are within the dog’s reach to avoid accidents. A min pin may try to chew or swallow a small object which can cause him to choke.

If you have kids in the house, it’s very important to teach them how to treat a Miniature Pinscher with respect. When roughly treated or hurt, a min pin will run away and may become fearful of children. Children should be discouraged from lifting or handling min pins frequently as wrong handling can result to injury.

Our own Tobias is a chocolate min pin with a cropped tail. For me, he looks a lot like a fawn without specks. He loves to snuggle and loves to play too. The moment he sees me sit in front of the computer, he would want to be lifted so he can stay on my lap or at the back of my seat. He likes to take afternoon naps with me on the bed too! But at night he prefers to sleep on his own bed.

Tobias is very protective of me. He doesn’t seem to want anyone to be coming near me without his consent. He does not bite but he will only try to intimidate you with his bark. He's a very sweet guy though and once you get to know him, you'll surely want to have your own min pin too.

Puppy Protects Two Boys from Diabetic Seizures

Discourage Your Dog from Drinking from the Toilet Bowl

Dogs are easily attracted to drink water from the toilet bowl because the water is cool and easily accessible. However, dog owners must discourage their dogs from this bad drinking habit for obvious health reasons.

Toilet water is not the most ideal thirst quencher. Bacteria and germs in the water can cause gastrointestinal problems and diseases to your pooch. Add to this, toilet cleaning agents that you use may contain strong chemicals that can be fatal when ingested.

The Highs and Lows of Raising a Puppy

2 months ago, George came home with us and finally, I got my long time wish to care for a dog . I knew from the start that it will not be easy, that there will be challenges, that I will have more chores to do, that having a dog is a BIG responsiblity.

Now that George is here, I had to go back to everything I researched about dog training. Obviously, actual dog training is a whole different thing from theory. It was even more difficult than I expected.

George was not exactly the easiest puppy to train. Like most puppies, he is energetic, curious, impatient, naughty, and sometimes he does things that can really try your temper. In two months, George has managed to destroy at least 6 (if i'm counting right) of our slippers, there are 2 large holes on the wall, and the kitchen counter has been badly chipped and chewed on.

I am so thankful that my husband is supportive about it and helps me out in every way he can. Although he wasn't too enthusiastic about bringing home a puppy (It's not because he does not like dogs but because we live in a small apartment where caring for a dog would not be easy.), I can see that George is starting to find a space in my hubby's good heart. We really had the hardest time on potty and poop training. If you have a dog, I think you can understand when I say that there was a lot of cleaning up to do.

Now that he is a little over 4 months old, he has learned a few lessons: that he has to go outside to poop and that he has to SIT first before he can get what he wanted (still learning that one i guess, he keeps forgetting) .

George still needs a lot of training to learn and I'm beginning to feel that we really need the help of a professional dog trainer to teach George about good behavior. I wish there was a behavior school for dogs where we live but I don't think there is. The only thing I'm sure of at this moment is that I don't have any regrets about having George with us. He's our little furry, bundle of joy!

Use a toothpaste for dogs. Ask your vet for a recommended brand of doggy toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste as some ingredients may be too strong for dogs and unsafe to swallow. Also, dog's would never like the mint flavor of toothpastes people use.

Introduce the new taste. Put a small amount of the doggy toothpaste on your finger and let your dog get accustomed to the taste of this new treat. Do this for a few days. Causes of Pet Obesity

It is interesting to note that pet owners who lead an inactive lifestyle are most likely to have overweight pets as well. The lack of physical activity can be unhealthy and even dangerous for humans and pets alike.

Having a dog can be physically beneficial if the dog owner actually walks his/her pooch. If you’re too lazy or too busy to go out and walk your dog or run with your dog, either you, your dog or both of you may be at risk of weight problem.

Another cause of obesity among pets is an unhealthy feeding routine. Pets have a tendency to overeat and pet owners have a tendency to overfeed. Some pet owners feed their dogs or cats with too much food than their caloric need or body requirement. Bo, the Portuguese Water Dog has officially arrived at the White House. After some controversies as to the 6-month old PWD’s origin, the Obama’s welcomed the first pooch to his new home last April 14. Apparently, Bo was a gift from Ted Kennedy (who also has 2 PWDs from Bo’s breeder) after Bo’s first owners gave him up. I’m not very familiar with this breed so I came up with this research:

Portuguese Water Dog History

Aptly named the Portuguese Water Dog, this canine breed was originally a fisherman’s dog in Portugal. Known for its strength and exceptional swimming ability (the PWD can swim all day), it was the perfect fisherman companion (to retrieve fishing nets, carry messages from the boat to shore, guard boats, and dove for fish).

Appearance: The PWD is a medium built dog. The size and height proportions range from 20-23 inches, 42 to 60 pounds for males; and 17 to 21 inches and 35 to 50 pounds for females. The body is solid, muscular and well-balanced.

PWDs have wavy or curly coat in black, brown or white (or combinations of these colors). Despite its thick coat which requires regular grooming, the Portuguese Water Dog is known to be a hypoallergenic breed, which means dog lovers with mild allergies may very well consider it for a pet.

How to Stop Your Dog from Pulling on the Leash

Notice how untrained dogs pull on the leash as their human helplessly tries to make them stop? Dog walking can be a lot of fun, but if your dog isn’t following your lead, it can be very strenuous and frustrating. How do you train a dog to walk properly and follow your lead? Here are the steps:

Before putting on the leash, let your dog sit and stay**. Dogs love to go out for walks and seeing you with that leash in your hand can make him ecstatic.

Never put on that leash until he sits and stays. If you do, he’ll get used to jumping around and would never stay still as you put on the leash on his neck.

If he continues to jump around, put the leash away and repeat the command “Sit”. Make sure that your dog understands that unless he does as told, he’s not going out for a walk. If he sits and stays, and waits for you to put on the leash, praise him, give him a pat and assure him that he’s done a good job.

Walk him to the door. After putting on the leash, your dog may excitedly run towards the door, pulling you as he goes. If this happens, repeat the Sit and Stay command and bring him back to the original position. Again, make him understand that unless he does as told, no walking will happen.

You should be the one to lead him to the door. Whenever your dog tries to lunge or pull on the leash, make him return to the original position. Repeat the Sit and Stay command. You may have to do this several times until your dog realizes that he can only get out that door if he patiently waits for his human to walk him there.

Don’t open the door until your dog stays. Your dog should calmly wait for you to open the door. An untrained dog has the tendency to be excited and to lunge forward. He needs to learn that to get what he want, he must Sit, Stay, and Wait for his master to give him the go signal.

Once outside, follow the same steps. As long as the leash remains slack, praise your dog and let him walk forward. When the leash tightens because he’s pulling on, stop moving. Gently pull back and repeat the Sit and Stay command. If your dog obeys, praise him and allow him to walk on.

Keep the dog to your left. Discourage your dog from walking on a zigzag manner by walking him always to your left. In case, he wounds the leash around a pole, let him disentangle himself.

What is Dog Agility Training?

Have you thought about enrolling your dog in agility training? Why not? Agility training doesn’t just teach a dog how to respond well, it also enhances a dog’s physical and mental capacity. It also strengthens the bond between a dog and his human.

Dog agility started in the United Kingdom at the “Cruft’s” dog show in 1978 when dog trainer Peter Meanwell demonstrated a dog’s ability to take on an obstacle course in front of a big audience. It became such a hit that official dog agility training and competitions were started.

Dog agility competitions have become a popular sport among dogs lovers and dogs alike. In the US, several dog organizations such as the American Kennel Club(AKC), the United States Dog Agility Association– just to name a few- host these prestigious competitions. National championships are held annually by the USDAA and AKC to award the best dog for the year.

What is agility training and how is it done? During the actual competition, dogs are expected to complete the obstacles with only the support of their handler. The most common obstacles used is the A-frame, the dog walk, the teeter-totter or see-saw, the crossover, tunnels, jumps or hurdles, the pause table, pause box, weave poles, swing plank, sway bridge and others.

Handlers are not allowed to give treats to the dog through-out the obstacle course. A handler can only give direction and encouragement to help the dog finish the obstacles. A dog must not be distracted by other things or smells around him as to let off from the course.

Thus, the competition not only tests a dog’s physical strength and intelligence, it is also a test of the dog’s ability to focus on the task at hand. Training a dog for a competition requires patience and a lot of practice. Still, winning a competition can be a really fulfilling experience for both the dog and his handler.

Johann has been training since 2005 and has competed in both the USDAA and AKC agility competitions. He is a 2007 Cynosport World Games Dog Agility Grand Prix and Steeplechase Qualifier! A Dog's Compassion

I have not the least doubt in my heart that dogs are capable of showing the bravest compassion and unconditional love. The photo shows a dog who bravely crossed a street to save his fellow who was hit by a car. After realizing that his friend was dead, he tries to move it away from the street and since he was unable to do so, he chose to stay by his side in the middle of this busy street to keep his friend company. Some Things to Remember on Dog Training

Every dog owner wants a well-behaved dog - a dog who responds to your commands and does not give you a problem. But all dogs need proper training. Here are some things to remember when training a dog:

Keeping expectations real. A dog owner training a dog for the first time can have too much expectation. Seeing other dogs who have been properly trained behave so well and do a lot of tricks can affect your perception. You may also expect your dog to do the same especially if it's the same breed as your neighbor's well-trained dog.

Always remember that training a dog takes time and effort. Don't expect your dog to learn a new trick in just a short time. In addition, different dog breeds have distinct personalities, strengths and weaknesses. Don't expect your dog to do something that he isn't capable of or isn't in his nature.

Patience is a virtue. Canine training is a serious commitment. You can't just train a dog for a few days and then give up. Different dogs learn differently. Some dogs maybe more easily distracted than others. Some dogs can take a lot time to learn than others. If you really want your dog to learn, be patient. Continuous practice is the key to perfecting any trick or command.

Reprimanding your dog more than what is needed. Correcting a dog when he's done wrong should be done while your dog is doing it or immediately after. Reprimanding your dog for a wrong deed he committed 5 minutes ago is useless. This will only confuse your poor dog about what you're angry about.

Do not confuse your dog. Consistency is the key to dog training. A dog can only understand two types of commands - Yes and No. A dog cannot decipher between Yes sometimes and No sometimes. So if you don't want your dog jumping on you when you're all dressed up, don't let him do so even when you're wearing pajamas.

Using too many training methods. Dog trainers use different methods in canine training. However, trying to mix them all up is not the proper way of training. Find a technique that will work for you and your dog and stick to it. Study your chosen method and focus on it.

Never hurt your dog. Whether your dog is not paying attention to your training or is not getting your commands, never punish your dog by inflicting pain. Physical injury is not the way to help your dog learn.

Always reward a dog that does well. A dog responds with positive reinforcement. A dog normally wants to please his human, he wants to know if he's doing the right thing. So, praise your dog and give him the treats he deserve if he's performing a good job.

Here are some simple dog grooming tips:

Always do a complete check on your dog's body parts -from his paws, nails, ears, nose, hair - check for any scars, bumps, allergies, fleas, ticks and any signs of infection.
Trim your dog's nails at least once a month.
Brush your dog's teeth USING A DOG's TOOTHPASTE and a toothbrush with soft bristles at least twice a week.
Clean your dog's face using a damp cloth every day.
Brush your dog's coat to prevent tangles and get rid of dead hair especially for dogs who shed a lot. Brushing your dog's coat encourages new hair growth.
Bathe your dog regularly (depending on the breed) using a Dog shampoo and lukewarm water.

Remember to start grooming your dogs early so that when they grow older, you will not have a hard time. Every dog owner must remember, "A clean dog is a healthy dog and a healthy dog is a happy dog."

Do Dogs Look Like Their Owners?

Most dog owners choose a purebred dog that have resemblance to them, this is according to the May 2005 issue of the American Psychological Society's Psychological Science journal. The study was conducted by researchers of the University of California in San Diego where judges were given photos of dogs and humans, and were asked to match each dog with his owner.

Judges were able to match 16 purebreds with their owners out of 45 pictures of dogs which includes 25 purebreds and 22 mongrels. Judges found a harder time matching mongrels to their owners. Why are they having a difficult time matching mongrels? Because mongrels or mixed breeds have more unpredictable appearance compared with purebreds.

The theory disproves claims that dog owners came to resemble their dogs after years of being together, as do with married couples. In contrast, people seem to pick a dog that "they feel" or "unconsciously think" matches their looks of personality. With a mongrel, it's a lot harder to tell how they would look like when they grow old.

According to US Scientists, there is a remarkably large number of cases where dog owners really do resemble their dog's features. For instance, big-haired people with big haired dogs, tall people with tall dogs, big people with big dogs, and so on. However, the similarity can be far more than just the more obvious physical features.

The Hardscrabble Chronicles

Me and my friend Kat shared a common love for a lot of things. One of those things is a book called The Hardscrabble Chronicles by Laurie Bogart Morrow. I bought it on a sale for only 30 pesos, if I remember right at Booksale Baguio.

To my surprise, it was really a wonderful, nostalgic, heart-touching book. The author tells about the life in the town of Hardscrabble somewhere in New England. It tells about the challenges of moving in a new and small town, anecdotes of the townspeople, and finally being part of a community that learned to love.

The book is a continuation of Field & Stream columnist Corey Ford who named the town Hardscrabble. Although it is a fictional name, the town itself is where Corey Ford and Laurie Morrow has actually lived.

What made this book so close to our hearts are the stories that tell about dogs that have been part of their lives. There's Jet of Huntress Bridge who faithfully waited for his master up to the very end; The Legend of Big Boy and George Allard's Dog; Each Year is Seven and Lost. It has been almost four years since I read that book and some of the stories I can't recall as detailed as I want to. All the dog stories in the book has trully touched me and brought me to tears. I intend to read it again one of these days. Kat loved it so much that I gave it to her when she went back home to Manila.

As I'm writing this, the Bee Gees are playing as the storm rages outside. Miss you, Kat! I miss your company!

Bugging "Johann" the dog

Yesterday, I was visited by Johann,the dog. I checked out his blog and learned that he was rescued and adopted in 2004. He was named after Johann Sebastian Bach. Johann has been competing in agility training since June 2005 and he is a 2007 Cynosport World Games Dog Agility Grand Prix Qualifier! Congratulations, Johann! Your mum must be so proud!!!
